The film is set in the isolated desert town of Perfection, Nevada, where handymen Valentine "Val" McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Fred Ward) are tired of their mundane lives and plan to leave town. However, their plans are halted when they discover several residents dead under mysterious circumstances.
Soon, they realize that gigantic, underground, worm-like creatures—later called “Graboids”—are tunneling through the earth and attacking anything that creates vibrations on the surface. With the creatures hunting them, Val, Earl, and the remaining townspeople must come together to survive and find a way to kill these monsters before they are all devoured.
