The film is set several years after the events of Lake Placid 2. It follows Nathan Bickerman (played by Colin Ferguson), a wildlife officer who has recently moved into the lakeside cabin formerly owned by his late aunt, Sadie Bickerman—the original crocodile feeder from the first film.
Nathan lives there with his wife Susan and young son Connor. Unbeknownst to his parents, Connor has been secretly feeding meat to a group of baby crocodiles living in nearby Black Lake—not realizing that they're rapidly growing into monstrous, man-eating reptiles.
As the crocodiles mature, they start attacking locals, campers, and trespassers. When the body count rises, Nathan teams up with a small group of survivors to try and stop the creatures before more people are killed.

Lake Placid 3 received mostly negative reviews for its low-budget effects, predictable plot, and B-movie acting, but it has a cult following among fans of cheesy creature features. The crocodile attacks are over-the-top and graphic, fitting the franchise's reputation for gory monster mayhem.
Actress Yancy Butler (Reba) became a recurring character, returning in later Lake Placid movies.
